Job Detail

PhD studentship: Comprehensive taxonomy, pangenomics and metabolic modelling of Streptomyces.
University of Strathclyde
Scotland, UK

Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

This project aims to: (i) improve genome mining for novel antimicrobial (and other) targets by decoding the evolutionary history of the taxonomically-complex Streptomyces genus and its secondary metabolite (antibiotic) synthetic clusters using whole- and pan-genome analysis; and (ii) identify useful traits for synthetic biology and industrial processes using pangenome analyses and genome-scale metabolic models. These models will allow quantitative assessment of predicted phenotypic differences, and for speculative “what if?” (knockout/substrate variation/etc.) experiments in silico.

Qualifications

The project would suit a candidate with a 2.1 degree or better in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and a strong interest in computational biology and bioinformatics. (European/UK students only, due to funding constraints).
